The name pomeranian refers to a region where the dog was imported as is accepted by many a breeder.
The breed first appeared in the United States in the 19th century and the AKC recognized the Pom in 1900. The APC held the first show in 1911 and the dogs started to gain in popularity. Current AKC breed standard was set in 1996.

Name Pomeranian -

The breed stems from Spitz-like dogs and was called so after a province in Prussia where it was bred a few centuries ago. The dogs then became a popular pet in Great Britain especially after Queen Victoria established a kennel. The size was gradually diminished from 20-30 to 3-7 pounds.
