Breeders should follow the Pomeranian's standard and breed only pedigree dogs. One of the most common mistakes is crossing a Pomeranian with a larger Spitz. The result can be really discouraging. Such a litter usually contains about 5 puppies that come in absolutely different sizes. Hence, if you are offered to choose a Pomeranian from this type of litter, you have some reasons to doubt whether the breeder has done a good job.

However, breeding Pomeranians with larger dogs of the Spitz group for a greater number of puppies is not the only cause of poor quality litters. Inexperienced breeders fail to determine a Pomeranian's background, overlooking a possibility of non-standard dogs in the ancestry. With this in mind, ask for pedigrees and other written proof of sound breeding lines.

Another threat that awaits Pomeranian breeders is the fact that bitches often need a caesarean. Puppies may be too large for a dog to manage the process single handed. Qualified help is necessary.
